New Portraits - Lizy Series

Here is a series that I worked on last semester (Fall 2003). When I needed models for my various portrait assignments, I put out the word that I would offer portraits for free to anyone willing to model for me. This girl needed high school yearbook photos done, so her mother volunteered her. I set up studio lights with a white paper background in the living room of my uncle's empty house. I took some color slides for my lighting assignment. Then, I shot this roll of black & white film for her yearbook. (The yearbook required a black & white print.) This was the first time I ever used studio lights for black & white shots. I was impressed with the sharpness and clarity of the negatives when I got them back from the processor. (From now on, I want to use studio lights for portraits whenever possible!)

The pose that she chose for her yearbook is not one of these, but I liked many of the shots so well that I took time to print these favorites late in the semester. I used a color enlarger for all of these. The first one is actually done on color paper as part of an extra credit assignment. (The goal was to adjust the color balance to have no color bias.) The rest were done on standard black & white RC paper that I had leftover from a previous semester. I scanned these from 8×10 prints.

I have not done this but am thinking it through and wondering if I have missed something:

If an imaginary photographer, Mister So&So, were to take pictures using colour film, could Mister So&So then make black & white prints from the colour negatives? Would this affect the quality of the prints as black and white photographs? How would the outcome be different from prints made from b&w negatives?

She is the daughter of my good friend and former photography professor, so I feel a little sheepish giving it to them, especially when there is so much halo-ing going on in this print. I am hoping it is one of those things that only I notice... heh. I imagine that I will need to reprint it.

I really had to burn this print to get it where I wanted it. It was taken in broad daylight, so I had to cook the sky quite a bit. Here's a small time chart that I made before I got the final print done.

member gallery

In addition to some other minor cosmetic changes I plan to make, I was thinking of using my pitiful web design skills to create a member gallery, wherein each member of this community could display one or two photographs. Not only would this be a pleasant addition to the community's appeal, but it would also be something that passersby could view - to get an idea of what we're about.

I will host the gallery.

What do you think of this? Is this a good idea or not?

If the response is positive, I will provide more details on maximum file size, etc...
